In Earth Sciences we often use analogue models to describe and explore geological processes. In this video, a very simple analogue experiment explores how the lithosphere can flex in response to surface loads - https://lnkd.in/emGupx75.Even more powerful though, in my opinion at least, is the combination of analogue and numerical model experiments. The very simple numerical model represents the same physics as the water tank, and shows how low-flexural rigidity oceanic lithosphere should respond to growth of an intraplate volcanic complex. As ever, the initial version of the model is as simple as possible, but we can already see how it could be analysed and developed to explore the dynamic interaction between different volcanic, tectonic and erosion-deposition processes.

Topic: Magnetic Sea Floor Striping 🧭This Anchoring Phenomenon provides students with an opportunity to grapple with a large-scale, real-world phenomenon to which they can apply the models of magnetism developed throughout the chapter. Students use their model-based reasoning to envision and represent the alternating magnetization of the seafloor, considering what possible mechanisms might be responsible for this phenomenon. Ultimately, they apply the formalized Domain Model of Magnetism to the phenomenon of seafloor striping, relating it to Earth science standards about seafloor spreading and geomagnetic reversal. This exploration begins laying the groundwork for future explorations into Earth science standards related to the unifying theory of tectonic plate movement.#NGSS #physicsphenomena #PEERPhysics

Dear Network, we are delighted to announce this week's Math Seminar at Khalifa University. So, this week we are pleased to welcome Prof. stefano picotti from the National Institute of Oceanography and Applied Geophysics, Italy. His talk will take place on Wednesday, the 6th of March 2024, from 3 to 4 pm GST. This event will take place at ADCO Auditorium but will also be accessible to everyone through the following #MSTeams link:https://lnkd.in/dejH_Y95Title: Feasibility studies for monitoring geological storage of CO2 and H2 – Rock physics and seismic modellingAbstract: This study presents a petro-elastic numerical methodology for creating realistic synthetic seismograms to evaluate the seismic response of CO2 or H2 injection in depleted gas reservoirs or aquifers. By simulating the seismic properties of reservoir rock saturated with different gases and brine, the methodology aims to accurately represent gas distribution and saturation during and after injection, taking into account in-situ pore pressure and temperature. Utilizing the Peng-Robinson equation and an upscaling procedure to model mesoscopic loss mechanisms, the research employs viscoelastic differential equations, adopting either the Zener or Cole-Cole models for wave propagation simulations. Through cross-well tomographic inversions and sensitivity assessments, the study demonstrates the effectiveness of seismic monitoring for detecting gas plumes and potential leakages, highlighting its feasibility for CO2 and H2 storage.Looking forward to seeing you at this event. Special thanks go to Dr. Davide Batic for putting us in contact with this speaker.Causal Dynamics
